Oma Rodger and Stephen Walsh are the owners of a property located approximately 20km southwest of Devonport. The property is a residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary used for native wildlife rehabilitation. It is Oma and Stephen’s intent to remain on their sanctuary for at least another 20 years, rehabilitating wildlife for as long as possible, and they have also begun revegetating riparian areas on the property.
The sanctuary covers approximately 10.12 hectares adjacent to Crown Land and bordered by the Wilmot River. The predominant vegetation types are white gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) forest, which runs through two other bush blocks to Dooleys Track Reserve, and thick rainforest.
Known wildlife inhabitants of the sanctuary include Bennett’s wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus), red-bellied pademelons (Thylogale billardierii), ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) and brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) possums, wedge-tailed eagles (Aquila audax fleayi), white-bellied sea eagles (Haliaeetus leucogaster), eastern barred bandicoots (Perameles gunnii), Tasmanian nativehens (Gallinula mortierii), Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii), eastern (Dasyurus viverrinus) and spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus) and white-faced herons (Egretta novaehollandiae).
