Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / NSW / Girin

Liesl Pollak is the owner of Girin, a property located in approximately 20km northwest of Kempsey.  The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary also used for wildlife rehabilitation, and it is Liesl’s intent to further protect her land for these purposes by entering into a binding conservation agreement with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.

The sanctuary covers 10 hectares predominantly comprised of dry sclerophyll forest and sub-tropical rainforest, with vegetation species including tallowwood (Eucalyptus microcorys), Sydney blue gum (Eucalyptus saligna), red cedar (Toona ciliata) and Australian tree fern (Cyathea cooperi), as well as a variety of maidenhair ferns (Adiantum spp.), ironbark (Eucalyptus spp.), Acacia and Melaleuca species.

Wildlife is abundant on Girin, with species known to be present including red-necked (Macropus rufogriseus) and swamp (Wallabia bicolor) wallabies, eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail possums (Pseudocheirus peregrinus), sugar (Petaurus breviceps), squirrel (P. norfolcensis) and feathertail (Acrobates pygmaeus) gliders, and numerous species of frogs, lizards and snakes.  Examples of flourishing bird life on the sanctuary include yellow-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus funereus), Australian king parrots (Alisterus scapularis), rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus haematodus), rosellas (Platycercus spp.), satin bower birds (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus), many honeyeaters, kingfishers and finches, as well as several migratory and wetland birds.
