A home, meditation retreat, residential Buddhist community, wallaby rehabilitation site and wildlife sanctuary

Description

Satyagandhi, Megha, Viryadana and Akasamati are residents of Naganaga Vihara, a property located approximately 85km Northwest of Port Macquarie that is owned by Friends of the Western Buddhist Order Toorooka Inc. The property's primary uses are as a home and residential Buddhist community; for the rehabilitation and care of orphaned wallabies; and for Buddhist meditation retreats. As members of FAWNA, it is Satyagandhi, Megha, Viryadana and Akasamati's intention to continue the safe rehabilitation of macropods for release, while continuing conservation related activities on Naganaga Vihara including weed removal and planting native and indigenous species.

The sanctuary covers approximately 66.7 hectares comprised almost entirely of bushland (predominantly dry sclerophyll), with a ridge running down to Macleay River. Naganaga Vihara also features pockets of rainforest, cycads and grass trees (Xanthorrhoea spp.).

Wildlife species known to be present on the property includes brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus), common wallaroos (Macropus robustus), northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus), grey-headed flying foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus), sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), dingos (Canis dingo), spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus), eastern long-necked turtles (Chelodina longicollis), lace monitors (Varanus varius), microbats, red-legged pademelons (Thylogale stigmatica) and a wide variety of frogs, snakes and birds including white-bellied sea eagles (Haliaeetus leucogaster), wedge-tailed eagles (Aquila audax), tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides), black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus spp.) and rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus).
