An eco-friendly residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary

Description

David and Joyce Turner are the owners of Giba Khan, a property located in Kyogle, approximately 45km northwest of Lismore, New South Wales.  The property is a wildlife-friendly sanctuary and it is David and Joyce’s intent to assist in the rehabilitation of flora and fauna on the property while continuing to allow access for people to experience historical trails on the site.

The property covers 6.5 hectares of regenerating wet sclerophyll and rainforest vegetation as well as historical pasture, with a creek providing a valuable source of water for wildlife species.  A range of eucalypt species including tallowwoods (Eucalyptus microcorys) and red box gums (Eucaylptus polyanthemos) exist on the property as well as many rainforest species. The property is fronted by Warrazambil Creek Mixed Cool Temperate and Rainforest slopes and forms part of the wildlife corridor connecting Border Ranges National Park. Exceptional rainfall in the area produces a seasonal waterfall gully.

Giba Khan is incredibly abundant in birds, wildlife and plant diversity. Wildlife species known to inhabit the sanctuary include dingoes (Canis lupus dingo), Victorian rifle birds (Ptiloris victoriae), azure kingfishers (Alcedo azurea), red-necked pademelons (Thylogale thetis), superb fairy-wrens (Malurus cyaneus), brush turkeys (Alectura lathami), and Australian logrunners (Orthonyx temminckii).
