John Woods and Marie Tunks are the owners of Cluain Meala Sanctuary, a property located approximately 10km west of Grafton. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary also used for small scale grazing, and it is John and Marie’s intent for it to continue to be used for conservation and wildlife protection.
Cluain Meala Sanctuary covers approximately 8 hectares of native bushland with one boundary adjoining Munns Creek. Vegetation includes a variety of eucalypt species (Eucalyptus spp.), smooth-barked apples (Angophora costata), lemon-scented gums (Corymbia citriodora), brush boxes (Lophostemon confertus), golden wattles (Acacia pycnantha), grevilleas (Grevillea spp.) and banksias (Banksia spp.).
Wildlife species known to inhabit the sanctuary include spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), eastern water dragons (Physignathus lesueurii), platypuses (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), and a variety of bird and reptile species.
