A dedicated wildlife sanctuary and recreation site

Description

Barbara Linley is the owner of Tullymorgan, a property situated in Tullymorgan, approximately 25km west of Maclean, New South Wales. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary also used for recreation and to agist cattle during rotational grazing. Barbara intends to improve the quality of the land by clearing invasive weeds and restoring the property’s natural values. In the future she has plans to establish an apiary on-site and restore the property for recreation and potential ecotourism.

The property covers approximately 79 hectares, with 12 hectares cleared by previous owners. The property is situated on an irregular shaped block on undulating land and bounded on one side by Filans Creek. Pockets of remnant tropical rainforest occur along the two creeklines and eucalypt woodlands throughout the rest of the property, which also features two ephemeral wetland areas. The owner is currently clearing lantana, fire weed and cotton bush from the cleared area, and bush regeneration is occurring naturally in the woodlands.

Dominant vegetation species include red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), flooded gum (E. grandis), iron bark (E. crebra), tallowwood (E. microcorys) and red bloodwood (Corymbia gummifera). Melaleucas, lilly pillies (Syzygium smithii), orchids, she oaks (Casuarina spp.) and staghorn ferns (Platycerium spp.) are also present.

A wide range of wildlife is present including swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), lace monitors (Varanus varius), sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), snakes, turtles, butterflies and dragonflies. An array of native birds is also present including eastern yellow robins (Eopsaltria australis) and azure kingfishers (Alcedo azurea).
