A home, wildlife-friendly sanctuary and rehabilitation site for raptors

Description

Peggy McDonald and Keith Pauley are the owners of Higher Ground Raptor Centre, a property situated in Fitzroy Falls, approximately 50km northwest of Nowra, New South Wales. The property is a home, wildlife-friendly sanctuary and a rehabilitation site for native birds, primarily raptors. With the largest free-flight enclosures for birds of prey in Australia, the centre is at the forefront of the raptor rehabilitation sector and Peggy and Keith intend to maintain it for this purpose.

The property covers approximately 6.88 hectares, with a section cleared for the homestead and rehabilitation aviaries. The remainder is comprised of bushland intersected with walking trails, backing onto Morton National Park. Situated on the Illawarra escarpment, the dominant vegetation consists of healthy dry and wet sclerophyll forest.

A wide range of wildlife is found on the property including greater gliders (Petauroides volans), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), microbats, tiger snakes (Notechis scutatus) and red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus).

Birdlife is abundant and includes gang-gang cockatoos (Callocephalon fimbriatum), yellow-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus funereus), powerful owls (Ninox strenua), southern boobooks (Ninox boobook) and eastern whip birds (Psophodes olivaceus), as well as many migratory species.
