Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / NSW / Jo and Kurt’s Refuge

Jo and Kurt Ploszczyniec are the owners of a property situated in Googong, approximately 18km south of Queanbeyan, New South Wales. The property is a home and dedicated wildlife sanctuary, and the owners wish to maintain the property for these purposes. Jo and Kurt aim to improve the biodiversity of the existing habitat by controlling St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), feral deer and red foxes, and have plans to establish a small vehicle path through the property to aid with maintenance and fire preparedness.

The property covers approximately 80 hectares and is situated on hilly land with multiple watercourses. Vegetation is largely comprised of eucalypt woodland, with an understory of native grasses. The owners have left the property largely uncleared, with the exception of a four-hectare space containing a building envelope.

A wide variety of native species are present including eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) possums, native mice and rats, lizards, snakes and a range of native birds.
