A residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary

Description

Sharon and Darren are the owners of Wakhidna, a property situated in Broughton Vale, approximately 25km north of Nowra, New South Wales. The property is a residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary, and the owners wish to conserve, support and live alongside the native species present.

Sharon and Darren have registered Wildlife Rescue South Coast with the aim of rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife on the property and are members of the Berry Bush Links project, an initiative working to reconnect isolated forests in the region. They are also registered with Land For Wildlife and have applied to the Biodiversity Conservation Trust to register Wakhidna as a Wildlife Refuge.

The property covers 12.19 hectares across a mixture of densely vegetated rainforest and bushland on an escarpment, with a small area cleared for the homestead. The property is intersected by Snake Gully, which houses a permanent waterway.

Wildlife is abundant on Wakhidna and includes eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus), snakes, superb lyrebirds (Menura novaehollandiae) and powerful owls (Ninox strenua).
