A dedicated wildlife sanctuary on a regenerating bush block

Description

Bobbie Bayley and Owen Kelly are the owners of a property situated in Clarence, approximately 10km east of Lithgow, New South Wales. The property is a bush block comprised of vacant agricultural land. Bobbie and Owen plan to manage the property as a wildlife sanctuary, living on the land with minimal disturbance and restoring and conserving the existing habitat for the benefit of native species. The property is additionally registered with Land for Wildlife.

The property spans 14 hectares across steep terrain interspersed with large rock outcrops. Several first and second order creeks intersect the property, which also features some natural springs.

Native vegetation was burned in the 2019 fire season, and has naturally regenerated as dense, shrubby regrowth consisting of a diverse assemblage of native species. The existing vegetation is characterised as dry sclerophyll forest and hanging swamp wetlands.

The property provides habitat for a variety of ground-dwelling marsupials and reptiles. A wide range of birdlife is also present including red-browed finches (Neochmia temporalis), grey shrike-thrushes (Colluricincla harmonica), brown thornbills (Acanthiza pusilla), crimson rosellas (Platycercus elegans) and superb fairy-wrens (Malurus cyaneus).
