A residence, farm and wildlife refuge in a protected riparian zone and habitat corridor

Fiona and Daniel Wasley are the owners of Tarcoola, a property situated in Clarence Town, approximately 60km north of Newcastle, New South Wales. The property is a residence and wildlife refuge in a protected riparian zone, as well as a hobby farm and flower farm. The land is additionally registered with Land for Wildlife. Fiona and Daniel wish to maintain Tarcoola for these purposes and have recently conducted a site assessment to better understand the natural values of the riparian area. They plan to protect the land while raising awareness about the ecological importance of the region’s habitat corridor.

The property spans 2.67 hectares and features a pristine riparian area spanning 4,000 m2, in very good condition and with minimal invasive weeds. The block also supports a wildlife corridor connecting to the Wallaroo National Park and a neighbouring bushland block.

A recent ecological assessment has described Tarcoola as having “notable nature conservation values due to its connectivity to a large expanse of native bushland (Wallaroo National Park), particularly due to the large number of mature native trees and the structural diversity of the remnant vegetation”.

Vegetation is comprised of paperbarks (Melaleuca spp.), Angophora, tea trees (Leptospermum spp.), maidenhair ferns (Adiantum spp.), native orchids, Xanthorrhoea and a wide range of native grasses and shrubs. The property also has unconfirmed specimens of Vulnerable small-flower grevilleas (Grevillea parviflora ssp. parviflora).

A range of native fauna are found on the property including eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor) and possibly spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus). Birdlife is abundant and includes yellow-tailed black cockatoos (Zanda funereus), glossy black-cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami), finches, welcome swallows (Hirundo neoxena), galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla), ducks, eastern (Platycercus eximius) and crimson (Platycercus elegans) rosellas, magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae) and king parrots (Alisterus scapularis).
