A dedicated wildlife sanctuary and bush regeneration site

Description

Adrian and Gail Heyliger are the owners of Rocky Falls, a property situated in Atherton, approximately 80km southwest of Cairns, Queensland. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary, with native bushland spanning 40% of the block. Adrian and Gail wish to conserve the existing vegetation and regenerate another 20% of the property for wildlife.

The property spans 11 hectares, with 40% of the block comprised of remnant eucalypt woodland. Work is underway to restore cleared areas on the block.

Wildlife is abundant and includes Mareeba rock wallabies (Petrogale mareeba), agile wallabies (Notamacropus agilis), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), northern quolls (Dasyurus hallucatus), dingoes (Canis dingo), northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus), pythons, lace monitors (Varanus varius), raptors and red-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii).

Rocky Falls also provides habitat for a variety of native snakes, geckos, parrots, nectar and insect-feeding birds, frogs, bees, spiders and butterflies.
