A residence, wildlife sanctuary and bush regeneration site

Description

Glenn Bellis and Glynis Lee are the owners of a property situated in Speewah, approximately 30km west of Cairns, Queensland. The property is a residence as well as a wildlife sanctuary and bush regeneration site. Glenn and Glynis live on the property and are working towards revegetating cleared land for the benefit of local indigenous species and their habitat.

The property spans 2.05 hectares of largely cleared land, previously used as a cattle farm and to house horses. The land gently slopes towards a permanent creek to the north, forming part of the Boonooloo Reserve. Vegetation is largely comprised of remnant and revegetated tropical rainforest.

Wildlife is abundant and includes agile wallabies (Notamacropus agilis), southern cassowaries (Casuarius casuarius), Wompoo fruit doves (Ptilinopus magnificus), spotted catbirds (Ailuroedus maculosus), variegated fairy-wrens (Malurus lamberti), noisy pittas (Pitta versicolor), king parrots (Alisterus scapularis), bush stone-curlews (Burhinus grallarius), white-headed pigeons (Columba leucomela), graceful (Meliphaga gracilis) and brown (Lichmera indistincta) honeyeaters, double-barred finches (Taeniopygia bichenovii), black butcherbirds (Cracticus quoyi), green tree snakes (Morelia viridis), Ulysses butterflies (Papilio ulysses) and Cairns birdwing butterflies (Ornithoptera euphorion).
