Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / QLD / Stephanie and Bernie’s Refuge

Stephanie and Bernie Fitzgerald are the owners of a property located approximately 20km south east of Hervey Bay. The property is a wildlife-friendly sanctuary and a residence. It is Stephanie and Bernie’s intent for the property to continue to provide a safe haven for local wildlife.

The property is a 0.2 hectare semi-rural block, with vegetation comprising mainly of eucalypts and native grasslands. Flora includes crepe myrtles (Lagerstroemia indica), bloodwoods (Corymbia spp.), leopards (Farfugium japonicum syn. Ligularia tussilaginea), lilly pillies (Syzygium smithii) and bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris).

Wildlife known to inhabit the property includes eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), eastern bearded dragons (Pogona barbata) and skinks (Cryptoblepharus spp.). The sanctuary is also home to an abundance of birdlife including rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus), pale-headed rosellas (Platycercus adscitus), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), white-chinned (Melithreptus albogularis) and blue-faced (Entomyzon cyanotis) honeyeaters, little corellas (Cacatua sanguinea), king parrots (Alisterus scapularis) and many families of ducks.
