A residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary


Merran and Carl's Refuge is approximately 2 hectares of bushland located in Hideaway Bay, approximately 40km from Proserpine. Merran and Carl are aiming to encourage native wildlife to occupy their property by protecting the current habitat through measures such as revegetation, removal of weeds and the establishment of nesting boxes.

A variety of wildlife is found on the property including northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus), green (Dendrelaphis punctulata) and brown (Boiga irregularistree snakes, common brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinuspossums, eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) and green tree frogs (Litoria caerulea).  A wide variety of birds are also present including brolgas (Grus rubicunda), red-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii), rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus) and pale-headed rosellas (Platycercus adscitus). 

Vegetation found on the property includes desert bloodwoods (Corymbia opaca), grey ironbarks (Eucalyptus paniculata), grass trees (Xanthorrhoea spp.), she-oaks (Allocasuarina spp.), basket grass (Lomandra longifolia), paper barks (Melaleuca spp.), pandanus, poplar gum (Eucalyptus platyphylla), acacia and cocky apples (Planchonia careya).
