Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / QLD / Finch Haven

Colin Johnson and Carole Bradley are the owners of Finch Haven, a property located in Guanaba, approximately 25km north west of Surfers Paradise, Queensland. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary used as a release site for local fauna and is a breeding site for migratory finches. It is Colin and Carole’s intent for the property to continue in these purposes and to put a permanent mechanism in place to ensure the property is protected in-perpetuity. Colin is a rare plant collector and has areas set aside for growing non-native rare and endangered flora. Finch Haven is also registered with Land for Wildlife.

Finch Haven is cut in to a hill and surrounded by a conservation reserve. It covers approximately 2 hectares which are mostly cleared with patchy remnants and the gradient varies from level to steep. A seasonal creek runs through the property providing a water source for local wildlife. Vegetation types include wet sclerophyll forest, dry marginal rainforest, eucalypt forest and some riparian habitat.

Finch Haven is abundant in wildlife, providing habitat for more than 90 bird species including glossy black-cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami), 15 frog species including Fleay’s barred frogs (Mixophyes fleayi), numerous Lepidoptera including Richmond birdwings (Ornithoptera richmondia), and a multitude of mammals and amphibians.
