Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / QLD / Grant and Faye’s Refuge

Grant Maw and Faye Whiffin are the owners of a property located south east of Bundaberg. The property is a wildlife-friendly sanctuary and a residence. It is Grant and Faye’s intent for the property to continue to be used in its current purposes and to cohabitate with local wildlife.

The sanctuary covers 12.1 hectares in a rural residential zone. Approximately 2.02 hectares are used for a house, yard and fruit trees while the remainder consists of undisturbed, natural bushland providing important habitat for wildlife. Two dams on the property act as a vital water source for local animals. Vegetation comprises mainly of wallum banksias (Banksia aemula), black wattles (Acacia mearnsii) and a variety of eucalypts (Eucalyptus spp.).

Wildlife species known to inhabit the area include eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), long nosed bandicoots (Perameles nasuta nasuta), ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) and brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) possums, Gould’s wattled (Chalinolobus gouldii), and northern bentwing (Miniopterus schreibersii orianae) bats, legless lizards (Delma spp.), sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus), kingfishers (Todiramphus spp.), Sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), willie wagtails (Rhipidura leucophrys), frilled-neck lizards (Chlamydosaurus kingii) and a variety of geckos, snakes and frogs.
