Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / QLD / Nonie’s Refuge

Nonie Metzler is the owner of a property located approximately 7km south of Gympie. The property is a dedicated wildlife-friendly sanctuary as well as a residence. It is Nonie’s intent for the property to continue to be used for its current purposes and Nonie is contemplating protecting her land in perpetuity by way of a conservation covenant. The property is also a member of Land for Wildlife.

The sanctuary spans approximately 16.2 hectares of sloping land covered in remnant vegetation with 4km of pathways and 3 dams which provide an important water source for local wildlife. Vegetation consists mainly of dry sclerophyll forest including a variety of eucalypts and native grasses. Wildlife species known to inhabit the property include koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), long-nosed bandicoots (Perameles nasuta) and a variety of bird and reptile species.
