A dedicated wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation site

Description

Robert and Sue Tidey are the owners of a property located approximately 50km south of Innisfail. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary used for wildlife rehabilitation, and it is Robert and Sue's intent for it to continue for these purposes, being kept as native habitat for local wildlife species and protected from development.

The sanctuary covers approximately 1 hectare of remnant rainforest, with vegetation species including licuala palms (Licuala spp.), quandongs (Elaeocarpus augustifolius), melaleucas (Melaleuca spp.), and a variety of other native trees, shrubs, grasses and vines.

Wildlife species for which the sanctuary is known to provide habitat include southern cassowaries (Casuarius casuarius), agile wallabies (Macropus agilis), orange-footed scrubfowl (Megapodius reinwardt), sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula), ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) and striped (Dactylopsila trivirgata) possums, short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), long-nosed bandicoots (Perameles nasuta), Papuan frogmouths (Podargus papuensis), and a wide range of other native birds and animals.
