Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / QLD / Sanctuary Retreat

Sanctuary Retreat is an affordable and unique rainforest eco-lodge and yoga retreat situated halfway between Townsville and Cairns. Guests stay in huts or cabins nestled into 50 acres of lush, tropical, private rainforest in close proximity to nature and wildlife including cassowaries.

The Rainforest Huts are accessed by a boardwalk to protect the forest floor, and link to an alfresco outside ensuite. The huts have no solid walls, instead the timber structure is screened on all four sides with weather proof curtains able to be drawn for privacy and protection from adverse weather.

Sanctuary Retreat’s Deluxe Canopy Cabins are designed for those who enjoy their creature comforts and are stylishly appointed with polished wooden floors, handmade natural timber furniture and spectacular glass-walled bathrooms looking out high in the trees.

Paul Verity is the owner of Sanctuary Retreat, a property located approximately 10km north of Mission Beach, Queensland. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary with two per cent of the land used for eco-friendly accommodation and a yoga retreat.

Sanctuary Retreat covers 18.37 hectares of tropical rainforest. Wildlife known to inhabit the area include southern cassowaries (Casuarius casuarius), striped possums (Dactylopsila trivirgata), green tree frogs (Litoria caerulea), northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), red-legged pademelons (Thylogale stigmatica), brown tree snakes (Boiga Irregularis), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), and tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides).
