A dedicated wildlife sanctuary offering eco-friendly accommodation

Kaylene White and Maree Gray are the owners of Stonewood Retreat, a property located approximately 15km south of Cape Tribulation. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary offering eco-friendly accommodation. It is Kaylene and Maree's intent for the property to continue to be used in a way which conserves the environment for future generations, including the removal of invasive plants which have taken over areas of natural vegetation. A permanent, spring-fed creek generates hydroelectricity which provides an exclusive source of energy for the property, minimising the impact on its World Heritage surrounds.

Stonewood Retreat covers 1.3 hectares of tropical rainforest and is a declared Category A or B area containing an endangered regional ecosystem with the QLD Department of Natural Mines and Resources. Vegetation is varied and typically consists of simple to complex mesophyll to notophyll vine forest.

Wildlife known to inhabit the area includes southern cassowaries (Casuarius casuarius), musky rat-kangaroos (Hypsiprymnodon moschatus), spotted-tail quolls (Dasyurus maculatus), Boyd's forest dragons (Hypsilurus boydii), eastern water dragons (Intellagama lesueurii), spotted catbirds (Ailuroedus melanotis), butcherbirds (Cracticus spp.) and a wide variety of other birdlife.
