Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / QLD / Licuala Rainforest Refuge

Licuala Rainforest Refuge is an 18 hectare sanctuary on the southern side of the Alexandra Range which borders the Daintree National Park. The owner, Tony, is now offering eco-accommodation in the form of a private cabin with facilities. Guests have the option to assist in the important work being carried out at the sanctuary’s wildlife rescue centre, including the rehabilitation of flying foxes (although, of course, you must be vaccinated).

The rainforest retreat is covered by undisturbed fan palm forest of conservation concern, and largely unexplored swamplands. Guests can explore the notophyll vine forests, and open and closed forests adjacent to the streams and floodplain which provide habitat for some highly threatened wildlife species.

Licuala Rainforest Refuge is an 18.62 hectare sanctuary on the southern side of the Alexandra Range, bordering the Daintree National Park, near Cape Kimberley and Mossman. Tony Young’s property is covered by undisturbed fan palm forest of conservation concern, and largely unexplored and inaccessible swamplands. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary, and Tony uses the sanctuary to rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife.

Licuala contains an abundance of rare and endangered species of plants and animals. The notophyll vine forests, and open and closed forests adjacent to the streams and floodplain provide habitat for some highly threatened wildlife species, including spectacled flying foxes (Pteropus conspicillatus), Bennett’s tree kangaroos (Dendrolagus bennettianus), southern cassowaries (Casuarius casuarius), and spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus).

The sanctuary is also home to amethystine pythons (Morelia amethistina) and brown water pythons (Liasis fuscus), as well as a range of species native to the Daintree region.
