Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / QLD / Melomy Creek

Elaine Plath is the owner of Melomy Creek, a property situated in Captain Creek, approximately 100km northwest of Bundaberg, Queensland. The property is a residence and hobby farm as well as a wildlife refuge, and it is Elaine’s intention to maintain it as such, with plans to establish a wildlife rehabilitation site in the future.

The property covers approximately 16.18 hectares and consists of around 90% uncleared bushland dominated by eucalypts and teatrees. A seasonal creek intersects the property and provides riparian habitat characterized by brush cherry and bottlebrushes.

Native vegetation is highly variable and includes bloodwoods (Corymbia spp.), ironbarks, blue gums (Eucalyptus tereticornis), paperbarks (Melaleuca spp.), banksias, casuarinas, brush cherries (Syzygium australe), ground ferns and native grasses.

This vegetation provides habitat for a vast array of wildlife including eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) possums, gliders, rakali (Hydromys chrysogaster) and grassland melomys (Melomys burtoni). Approximately 50 different bird species and 30 reptile species are also present. The riparian habitat also supports a range of native fish and eels as well as native frogs.
