Judy Andrews is the owner of a property situated in Kuranda, approximately 30km northwest of Cairns, Queensland. The property is a home and dedicated wildlife sanctuary. Judy wishes to protect the property as much as possible within state legislation to ensure that the natural values of the land are preserved in-perpetuity from clearing and other developments. The property is registered with Land for Wildlife, and a request for a Voluntary Declaration is currently under review.
The property spans 10.117 hectares on a densely vegetated block, backed by Dismal Creek to the west. A botanical report identified the property’s vegetation as a very good example of Kauri (Agathis robusta) Dominated Complex Notophyll Vine Forest on Metamorphic Soils. Two plant species of conservation significance have been identified. An abundance of wildlife is present including agile wallabies (Macropus agilis), red-legged pademelons (Thylogale stigmatica), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), striped possums (Dactylopsila trivirgata), quolls (Dasyurus spp.), Lumholtz’s tree kangaroos (Dendrolagus lumholtzi) and possibly green possums (Pseudochirops archeri).
The property also provides habitat for a wide variety of rodents, bats, gliders, reptiles, insects and birds, and a southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) was recently sighted in the area.
