Larry and Effie Maggio are the owners of Birds Heaven Mareeba Nature Reserve, a property situated in Mareeba, approximately 30km west of Cairns, Queensland. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary, and the owners intend to preserve it for the benefit of native species and their habitat.
The property covers approximately 30.35 hectares of untouched and protected bushland close to Emerald Falls. Vegetation is largely characterized by eucalypt woodland and native grassland.
A variety of native species are found on the property including northern bettongs (Bettongia tropica), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), agile wallabies (Macropus agilis), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) possums, sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps) and a range of reptiles.
