A dedicated wildlife sanctuary and recreational site

Description

David Honeyman is the owner of Esk Country Estate, a property situated in Esk, approximately 100km northwest of Brisbane, Queensland. The property is a recreational site as well as a dedicated wildlife sanctuary. David intends to maintain a small home on the property while restoring and conserving the natural area as much as possible. He plans to manage weeds and replant indigenous flowering species to support local wildlife, particularly native bees.

The property is a bush block covering 0.5 hectares and backing on to a koala refuge. Vegetation is characterized by open eucalypt woodland dominated by blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), with an understory of native grasses.

A wide range of wildlife is present including red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus), koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus), long-nosed bandicoots (Perameles nasuta), microbats and striped marsh frogs (Limnodynastes peronii).

An array of birdlife is also present including native owls, tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), glossy-black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami), hawks, crimson rosellas (Platycercus elegans), rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus) and many more.
