Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / SA / Monteith

Monteith is a 48.56 hectare sanctuary located approximately 90 km from Adelaide in South Australia.  Dedicated wildlife rehabilitators Kerry Colmer and Sean Moffat purchased the property with the goals of conservation and wildlife release.  While a third of the property has been partly cleared, the remainder consists mostly of regenerated mallee scrub, and provides habitat for a rich diversity of birdlife.

Species abounding on the sanctuary include elegant parrots (Neophema elegans) and white winged choughs (Corcorax melanorhamphos) which are listed as rare in South Australia. Other birds present include whistling kites (Haliastur sphenurus), black faced cuckoo shrikes (Coracina novaehollandiae), rainbow bee-eaters (Merops ornatus), superb fairy wrens (Malurus cyaneus), red-capped robins (Petroica goodenovii), little eagles (Hieraaetus morphnoides), pipits (Anthus spp.), red wattle birds (Anthochaera carunculata) and brown headed honey eaters (Melithreptus brevirostris).  Protected by a Land Management Agreement, Kerry and Sean are working hard to control exotic species in Monteith Sanctuary, and intend to revegetate the cleared and partly cleared areas within the property.
