A tourism and recreation site as well as a wildlife-friendly sanctuary

Description

Anita Muller and Andrew Bridges are the owners of Wagtails Country Retreat, a property situated in Kangarilla, approximately 30km south of Adelaide, South Australia. The property is a tourism and recreation site as well as a wildlife-friendly sanctuary, and it is the owners’ intention to preserve the property for the benefit of native wildlife. Anita and Andrew plan to revegetate and relandscape the property to create a habitat corridor and support native species.

The property covers 5.2 hectares on gently undulating land comprised of open paddocks lined with eucalypts. The property features a gully, dam and natural winter creek which provides water for native species. Vegetation is mainly comprised of remnant eucalypt woodland, grasslands and reeds which occur in the waterway.

Wildlife is abundant and includes koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus), geckos, pobblebonk frogs (Limnodynastes dumerilii), red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus), eastern brown snakes (Pseudonaja textilis), stick insects and an array of native spiders and insects. A southern brown bandicoot (Isoodon obesulus) has also been spotted on a neighbouring property.

An array of birdlife is also present including yellow-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus funereus), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), eastern rosellas (Platycercus eximius), magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen) and willy wagtails (Rhipidura leucophrys).
