A residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary

Description

Joana Ferreira Mendes and Daniel Cuttiford are the owners of Quinta dos Amigos, a property situated in Geeveston, approximately 60km southwest of Hobart, Tasmania. The property is a residence and dedicated wildlife sanctuary. Joana and Daniel run a small flock of sheep on the property and wish to restore and protect the land for the benefit of wildlife. The property is additionally registered with Land for Wildlife.

The property spans approximately 23 hectares with one side bordering a small creek and features several natural springs. Once used for agriculture, it is now comprised of 60% pasture and 40% remnant native forest. The owners are currently managing invasive weeds to assist with bush regeneration.

Native vegetation consists of a small wattle forest, several large eucalypts found throughout the property and a diverse array of native trees and shrubs in the riparian area. Blackwood, maples and pines have also been planted in some areas.

A wide range of wildlife is present including spotted-tailed quolls (Dasyurus maculatus), platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), Bennett’s wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus), Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagles (Aquila audax fleayi) and green rosellas (Platycercus caledonicus), along with many small native birds.
