Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / TAS / Veronika’s Refuge

Veronika Pearson is the owner of a property situated in Deep Bay, approximately 50km south of Hobart, Tasmania. The property is a home and wildlife-friendly sanctuary, also used for regenerative agriculture with a strong focus on rewilding. Veronika recently purchased the property and is planning to join Land for Wildlife to create a wildlife corridor with neighbouring wildlife-friendly properties.

The property is set beside a creek in a small valley running off the Huon River Estuary and spans 2.03 hectares. The block features a dam, two paddocks and a large homestead adjoining a garden, vegetable patch and orchard. Vegetation is largely comprised of eucalypt woodland, native grassland and marshland, with moderate blackberry (Rubus anglocandicans) and Scotch thistle (Onopordum acanthium) invasion. Some temperate rainforest species, including man ferns (Dicksonia antarctica), are also present in rocky outcrops along the creek line.

A wide range of wildlife has been sighted including Bennetts wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus), Tasmanian pademelons (Thylogale billardierii), wedge-tailed eagles (Aquila audax fleayi), ravens (Corvus tasmanicus), black currawongs (Strepera fuliginosa), wrens, parrots and robins. The property is also likely to provide habitat for eastern (Dasyurus viverrinus) and spotted-tailed (Dasyurus maculatus) quolls, Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) and short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus).
