A dedicated wildlife sanctuary and eco-friendly bush retreat

Kat and Steve Forrest are the owners of Mittagong Talia, a property situated in Eldorado, approximately 30km east of Wangaratta, Victoria. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary and tourist accommodation. The land is additionally registered with Land for Wildlife and is part of Bush for Birds, a project supported by North East Catchment Management Authority to restore habitat for threatened native birds. Kat and Steve wish to maintain the land for these purposes, supporting wildlife by restoring native habitat and controlling invasive weeds on the property.

Mittagong Talia spans 21.8 hectares within the Woolshed Valley, backing on to the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park with frontage to Reedy Creek to the north. Vegetation is comprised of red ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) woodland, an expansion of the nearby national park’s ecological community.

A wide range of wildlife is present on the property including koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor) and bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus). An abundance of native birds is also found on the property, including several threatened species.
