The Field Naturalists Club of Victoria is the owner of Mali Dunes, a property located approximately 60km northwest of Nhill. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary also used for wildlife rehabilitation and education, and it is the club’s intention for it to continue in these purposes while rehabilitating vegetation as to better provide for local wildlife. The biodiversity values of Mali Dunes are protected in-perpetuity by a Trust for Nature covenant.
The sanctuary covers 621 hectares of mallee sand dunes and clay swales with a major revegetation program underway. Mali Dunes was formerly a sheep property, but stock has been absent for more than 11 years, and vegetation types include mallee trees and a variety of heathland plants.
Wildlife species for which the sanctuary is known to provide habitat include typical mallee species such as malleefowl (Leipoa ocellata), eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), striated grasswrens (Amytornis striatus), white-browed babblers (Pomatostomus superciliosus), common dunnarts (Sminthopsis murina), and Butler’s legless lizards (Delma butleri).
