Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / VIC / Girragirra Ganya

Yalmambirra is the owner of Girragirra Ganya a property located approximately 20km East of Albury. The area was previously home to a thriving mining community and was then used for agriculture and pastoral business.  Yalmambirra has planted hundreds of native trees to revegetate and vegetation corridors have been created.  It is Yalmambirra’s intention to have the property thriving with native flora and fauna, and for Girragirra Ganya to be a safe and protected haven for wildlife. He hopes to continue their revegetation efforts and create more corridors for wildlife movement around the property and into those adjoining with the support of their neighbours.

The sanctuary covers 20 hectares of previously cleared land that has been revegetated with predominant vegetation including eucalypts, acacias, grevilleas, prickly tea trees and native grasses. There is a natural wetland area and access to a natural bore which is used to supply wildlife with water.

Wildlife present on the property is abundant, and includes eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), lizards, skinks, geckos, short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus) and brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), as well as a wide variety of bird species including eastern (Platycercus eximus) and crimson (Platycercus elegans) rosellas, galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla), sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), kites, finches, owls, swallows, wrens, robins, parrots, eagles and magpies.
