Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / VIC / Narkindie

Barry and Aileen Sullivan are the owners of Narkindie, a property located west of Portland. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary used for wildlife rehabilitation. It is Barry and Aileen’s intent for the property to be used as a reserve to protect fauna and flora while allowing scope for minor pastoral activities. The property has also been part of Land for Wildlife in Victoria since 1987.

Narkindie covers approximately 41 hectares of undulating farm land abutting coastal Crown land. Vegetation consists of stands of eucalypt woodland dominated by manna gums (E. viminalis), coastal tea-tree (Leptospermum laevigatum), open grasslands and bracken ferns (Pteridium esculentum).

Wildlife species known to inhabit the property include mobs of eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus), koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), lowland copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) and tiger (Notechis scutatus) snakes.
