Wildlife Land Trust / Sanctuaries / VIC / Margaret and Franz’s Refuge

Margaret and Franz Windisch are the owners of a property located in Cape Liptrap, approximately 40km Southwest of Foster. The property is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary used as a hobby farm and for lifestyle, and features areas of rehabilitated vegetation.  It is Margaret and Franz’s intent to preserve the sanctuary in its current state and continue to provide habitat for local wildlife.

The sanctuary covers approximately 10.12 hectares of which around 50% is comprised of pasture, with the remaining half being fenced off native vegetation.  Four dams are featured on the sanctuary, while vegetation types include coastal eucalypts, paper barks (Melaleuca spp.), saltbushes (Atriplex spp.), wattles (Acacia spp.), sheoaks (Casuarina spp.), correas and banksias among others.

Known wildlife inhabitants on the sanctuary include bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), ringtail (Pseudocheirus peregrinus), brushtail (Trichosurus vulpecula) and eastern pygmy (Cercartetus nanus) possums, short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), and native bush (Rattus fuscipes) and swamp rats (Rattus lutreolus), while birdlife includes eagles, wrens and numerous waterbirds.
