A residence, guest cottage and macadamia orchard as well as a dedicated sanctuary for wildlife

Paula Sothern and Andy Banks are the owners of Southern Banks, a property situated in Baskerville, approximately 25km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The property is a residence, guest cottage and macadamia orchard as well as a dedicated sanctuary for wildlife. Paula and Andy wish to continue using it for these purposes whilst retaining habitat for wildlife, particularly birds and native bees.

Southern Banks covers approximately 6.1 hectares, with around 400m of frontage onto the Swan River. Approximately half of the property is situated on the Swan River floodplain, consisting of fringing woodland of flooded gums (Eucalyptus grandis) and swamp paperbarks (Melaleuca ericifolia). A low open forest of she-oaks (Casuarina spp.) and saltwater paperbarks (Melaleuca cuticularis) also spans the property. The remaining elevated area comprises of a paddock, two houses and a macadamia orchard.

Wildlife on the property largely consists of forest and woodland birds including parrots, hawks, cockatoos, magpies (Cracticus tibicen) and kingfishers. Reptiles such as dugites (Pseudonaja affinis), tiger snakes (Notechis scutatus), shingleback lizards (Tiliqua rugosa) and western bearded dragons (Pogona minor) are also present throughout the property.
