A residence, wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation site

Description

Griselda Hitchcock is the owner of a property located in Barragup, approximately 5km east of Mandurah, Western Australia. The property is a residence as well as a wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation site. Griselda wishes to conserve the natural values of the property, with plans to find a conservation-minded buyer for it in the future. The property is registered with Land For Wildlife and protected in-perpetuity with a National Trust Conservation Covenant.

The property covers 2.86 hectares and backs on to the Serpentine River Reserve, forming a wildlife corridor with Goegrup Lake Reserve to the north. Vegetation is largely characterized by Tuart (Eucalyptus gomphocephala) eucalypt woodland and ephemeral paperbark swamp.

The bush block provides habitat for a wide range of wildlife including southern brown bandicoots (Isoodon obesulus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) and 20 species of reptiles and amphibians. Nearly 70 species of native wetland and woodland birds have also been identified, including yellow-billed spoonbills (Platalea flavipes) which nest on the property.
