Set on 80 acres of pristine bushland on the foothills of Mt Remarkable in the Southern Flinders Ranges, Kookaburra Creek Retreat has a range of accommodations to suit anyone. Stay in one of the uniquely rustic and self-contained cabins or camp beneath the majestic gums along the creek.

The easy walking trails on the property offer a great opportunity for wildlife spotting and photography – look out for kangaroos, euros, emus and a wide range of birdlife, with over 40 species identified! More adventurous types will enjoy exploring the nearby Heyson Trail, Mt Remarkable Summit Hike and Willowie Forest National Park, which features a variety of bike riding and bushwalking trails.

Melita and Joseph Shanks are the owners and managers of Kookaburra Creek Retreat, which is situated on the foothills of Mount Remarkable and covers approximately 32 hectares. It is bordered on three sides by Mount Remarkable National Park and features two dams and a small creek.

Vegetation is dominated by eucalypts including river red gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), blue gums (Eucalyptus leucoxylon), sugar gums (Eucalyptus cladocalyx) and peppermint box (Eucalyptus odorata). A wide variety of native flora such as native lemongrass (Cymbopogon ambiguus), curry bush (Helichrysum italicum), sticky hop bush (Dodonaea viscosa), she-oak (Allocasuarina spp.), garland lily (Calostemma purpureum), running postman (Kennedia prostrata) and bardi bush (Acacia victoriae) are also present throughout the property.

Wildlife is abundant on the property and includes western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus), euros (Macropus robustus), short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), lace monitors (Varanus varius), ringtail possums (Pseudocheirus peregrinus), and the occasional red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

A wide range of birdlife is also present on the property including emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae), wedge-tailed eagles (Aquila audax), galahs (Eolophus roseicapilla), laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae), sacred kingfishers (Todiramphus sanctus) and rainbow bee-eaters (Merops ornatus).
